Two years to the day after they won some new fans during a free outdoor show at the 2011 Montreal International Jazz Festival, Phronesis, a Scandinavian and British piano trio that executes impossibly complex changes with rock attitude, will return. This time, however, they’ll be doing a ticketed indoor show at L’Astral.
Bassist Jasper Høiby, pianist Ivo Neame and drummer Anton Eger have had jazz critics trying to outdo each other with superlatives, but nothing can convince you like seeing a live set.
So catch them if you can. And while you’re waiting, check out the tracks they have recommended for us this week:
Jasper Høiby’s picks:
1. God Bless the Absentee – Paul Simon
2. Letter From New York – Ana Silvera
3. Farafina – Lionel Loueke
4. Junk Magic – Craig Taborn
Anton Eger’s picks:
5. Fleer Ultra – Thundercat
6. Run for Love – Joan As A Policewoman
7. Census – Autolux
Ivo Neame’s picks:
8. Burning of the Midnight Lamp – The Jimi Hendrix Experience
9. Chant of the Soil – Keith Jarrett
10. Ondine, from Gaspard de la nuit (Ravel) – Martha Argerich
